JetBrains launches AI model for software development tasks

2024-10-23 21:00:12

JetBrains has announced the launch of Mellum, its own AI model specifically engineered for software development tasks.

Mellum has been integrated exclusively into JetBrains’ AI Assistant, reporting dramatic improvements in both speed and accuracy of code completions compared to previous implementations.

Unlike more extensive language models, Mellum has been purposefully designed with a smaller footprint to deliver near-instantaneous coding suggestions. The model currently supports five major programming languages – Java, Kotlin, Python, Go and PHP – with additional language support available through early access.

The performance metrics since Mellum’s integration are particularly noteworthy. JetBrains reports that completion latency has been slashed to one-third of its previous duration, while the acceptance rate for suggestions has reached approximately 40%—a figure the company notes stands as a robust industry benchmark.

Furthermore, the company has observed a three to four-fold reduction in suggestion cancellations, alongside more than doubling the total number of completions offered to developers.

Vladislav Tankov, Director of AI at JetBrains, said:

“The JetBrains AI Assistant carefully selects the most optimal model from OpenAI and Google for each use case. However, we recognised that to achieve truly powerful code completion, we needed to augment the Assistant with our own model. That’s why the launch of the Mellum model is a huge leap forward for us.

At the same time, the true power of our code completion system lies in the Mellum model’s deep integration with JetBrains IDEs. The synergy between client-side integration and server-side logic is crucial for providing fast, accurate, and context-aware suggestions, ensuring an enhanced coding experience with impressive results.”

JetBrains says it has taken steps to ensure that its AI for software development maintains high privacy standards. The model has been trained exclusively on publicly available code with permissive licensing, and the company confirms it neither stores nor utilises customer inputs during operation.
